Dear Hastings Community,
I am so proud to announce a wonderful event which I hope you will all attend. In celebration of Hastings' First Annual Culture Week, the Hastings Chinese Law & Culture Society is sponsoring a Chinese Painting Demonstration by contemporary Chinese artist, Shimo.
Shimo is incredible. He is acclaimed as being one of the most notable current artists from China. His art work is exhibited and collected throughout Asia, and he is now starting to show his work in the US. He uses traditional Chinese techniques and subjects but also has a modern aesthetic. He also does some beautiful Chinese calligraphy. We are so lucky to have him come to San Francisco and watch him paint a piece of artwork that will be donated to Hastings.
So come enjoy some beautiful art and FREE DIM SUM!! I hope to see you all there.
See the attachment for the Shimo's Painting Demonstration Flyer
To view his biography, reviews and a sampling of Shimo's artwork, go to: www.shimoartstudio.com
If you have any questions, please let me know! I especially need help getting the word out, so please forward this to your classmates and art lovers in San Francisco.
Best,, Jamie Wong, President, Hastings Chinese Law & Culture Society

- 3:40 - 5:30: Hastings to Haiti Film Screening, "The Agronomist"
@ Clara Foltz Room (Tower 1M)
The latest film from Academy-Award winning filmmaker Jonathan Demme, THE AGRONOMIST tells the story of Haitian national hero, journalist, and freedom fighter Jean L. Dominique. As owner and operator of his nation's oldest and only free radio station, Dominique fought tirelessly against Haiti's overwhelming injustice, oppression, and poverty. He spent much of the 80's and early 90's in exile in New York, where Demme continued to interview him throughout the years. But it was Dominique's shocking and still-unsolved assassination in April of 2000 that gave the director the impetus to assemble more than a decade's worth of material into a celebration of this dynamic man and his legacy.

This film is a documentary investigating the murder and subsequent injustice surrounding Emmett Louis Till's death. Many consider this case to be the true catalyst for the American Civil Rights Movement. 14 year old Till was abducted, beaten and murdered for one of the oldest Southern taboos: addressing a white woman in public. The murderers were soon arrested but later acquitted of murder by an all white, all male jury. Till's death sparked the Black Resistance of the South which later became known as the American Civil Rights movement. Scholars and historians have studied the murder but the facts surrounding the case leave much to be revealed. In 2004 the Department of Justice reopened the investigation into the case...
